Metro New Orleans Area Moving Tips

Moving comes with a long checklist of to-dos, and packing up your old home while you're in the process of buying a new one can get pretty stressful. Luckily, there are a few ways you can stay on top of things—and keep your stress levels down in the process! Take a look at our packing tips for a seamless moving process, and give us a call if you have any questions.

Before You Move

Planning ahead is the key to a successful move. Here's what you should get done in the weeks and months before your move.

Organize and declutter

Work your way through the house one room at a time, cleaning things up and packing up the things you know you won't be using.

Lighten the load

Having fewer things in general means you won't have to pack as much, so take the opportunity to make a few bucks and list your unwanted items online or at a yard sale!

Change your address

It can take the post office a few weeks to process a change of address, so give them plenty of advance notice so your mail doesn't end up in the wrong location.

Handy Packing Tips

  • Reinforce: Don't use flimsy boxes—opt for sturdy, reinforced cardboard and hefty packing tape.
  • Innovate: Pack dishes, bowls, plates, and other glass objects vertically, and use socks and clothing as padding for your more delicate items.
  • Pack small: Don't overload your boxes with the weightiest items. Be sure to spread out your heavy belongings!
  • Prevent leaks: Remove the tops and cover the openings of soaps, shampoos, and lotions with cling wrap, then twist the caps back on. Cling wrap can also be used to contain jewelry and prevent scratches on your furniture.
  • Prepare: You're going to want some things (like toilet paper, sheets, towels and dishes) right away, so pack an "Open Me First" box with all the essentials.
  • Label, label, label! As you're packing, label each box based on the room it goes in. Your future self will thank you!

On Moving Day

Moving Day is finally here! Here's what you should do to make sure you can handle any snags along the way.

Keep important info

Just like the "Open Me First" box, there are certain things you'll want along on moving day, like first aid supplies, medication, financial records, medical records, IDs, and other important documentation or high-value items. Keep them with you in a backpack.

Take an overnight bag

If you make it home late or before the moving truck, make sure you're prepared with things like a change of clothes, your toiletries, and a phone charger.

Have phone numbers handy

If you are using a moving company, keep your moving foreman's contact information with you in case you need to contact your movers for any reason. It's also handy to have your Bill of Loading and shipment registration number on hand.

After You Move

Clean first

Your home will never be this empty again, so take the opportunity to give everything a good deep clean before you move things in.

Unpack by room

Just like with the packing process, it's much easier to take the unpacking process on one room at a time. Make a schedule, and stick to it!

Enjoy your new home

Sit back, relax, and enjoy your new home. You've worked hard for it!
