  • Prices vary greatly depending on location, size and age.
  • New construction is not readily available in most Metairie neighborhoods, and in some areas, homes are being torn down to recapture the lots.
  • Old Metairie in MLS area 19 may be of special interest to those who enjoy the historic areas of New Orleans. With its massive oaks and fine homes, this area reminds of the Uptown area, though set away from much of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Fun Facts

  • Metairie was first settled by the French in the 1760s.
  • The area is named for the French language term for a tenant farm. This was the main economic activity in the area until the early 1900s.
  • The French built first along an area known as Metairie Ridge, a natural levee formed by an ancient branch of the Mississippi River. That ridge extended from modern day River Ridge into New Orleans East.
  • The route of that ridge is now Metairie Road.
  • A streetcar ran along Metairie Road during the early 1900s, and the upscale neighborhood now known as Old Metairie was developed.
  • After World War II, the land north of Metairie Road was drained and developed leading to rapid growth.
  • Metairie hosts a large Mardi Gras season considered by many to be more family-friendly than the celebrations in New Orleans.

A few notes about the pricing data:

  • All the sales information comes from the database of homes listed as sold by the Gulf South Real Estate Information Network.
  • The information is entered by many hundreds of listing agents and brokers, so we consider the data to be generally accurate but do not and cannot guarantee that it is exactly accurate.
  • These charts and tables should be regarded as general guides to trends in Metro New Orleans real estate and not as specific recommendations on the worth of individual homes. Each situation has its own variables, and it pays to have an experienced professional to determine the market value of any property prior to undertaking a transaction.
  • Multi-family homes used in this study contain four or fewer units.
