Fun Facts
- Gretna was settled in 1836 and was originally called Mechanicsham.
- It was an active railroad station on the Mississippi River and had a ferry that crossed the Mississippi River to New Orleans.
- The Zatarain family founded its still operating spice business in Gretna in 1889.
- Gretna was incorporated in 1913 as part of Jefferson Parish.
- Famous natives of Gretna include Emmett Hardy, an early jazz great; Lash La Rue, an actor in mid 1900s Western movies; and Mel Ott, a Major League Baseball Hall of Famer.
