Fun Facts

  • In 1719, a French nobleman received a land grant covering the present site of Algiers, and he started a plantation.
  • Some call 1719 the founding date of Algiers, but development as a city really began around 1800.
  • In the early 1800s, a large slaughterhouse operated in Algiers, and the area was called Slaughterhouse Point.
  • The name Algiers is thought to come from the city's proximity to New Orleans, much like that of Algeria with France.
  • Algiers Point lies directly across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter, and the Algiers Ferry has connected the two communities since 1827.
  • Algiers was incorporated as a city in 1840 and was annexed by New Orleans in 1870. That arrangement remains.

  • Literally a city within a city, Algiers is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River and is part of Orleans Parish.
  • Algiers Point is a secluded neighborhood with Victorian cottages dating back to the late 1800's giving a feeling of old New Orleans. From here, you can commute across the river to downtown New Orleans on the Algiers Ferry which docks near the foot of Canal Street.
  • Further south is Lower Algiers. It has a suburban air in many of its sections, there are several golf course developments and many houses offer large lots and neighborhood amenities.
  • Most of the residential properties in Algiers are single family homes.

A few notes about the pricing data:

  • All the sales information comes from the database of homes listed as sold by the Gulf South Real Estate Information Network.
  • The information is entered by many hundreds of listing agents and brokers, so we consider the data to be generally accurate but do not and cannot guarantee that it is exactly accurate.
  • These charts and tables should be regarded as general guides to trends in Metro New Orleans real estate and not as specific recommendations on the worth of individual homes. Each situation has its own variables, and it pays to have an experienced professional to determine the market value of any property prior to undertaking a transaction.
  • Multi-family homes used in this study contain four or fewer units.
