The Five Regions of Metro New Orleans
A home buyer can divide Metropolitan New Orleans into five broad sections. These areas include:
- The City of New Orleans - the historic French Quarter, Uptown and Garden District areas, the trendy Warehouse District and the reviving Lakeview and New Orleans East neighborhoods.
- East Jefferson - the close-in suburbs of Metairie, Kenner, River Ridge and Harahan have charms of their own.
- The Westbank - Just across the Mississippi River from the city, you can find Belle Chasse, English Turn, Algiers, Gretna and Harvey.
- The River Parishes - St. Charles and St. John Parishes which lie upriver from New Orleans. Cities here include Destrehan, Luling and Laplace.
- The North Shore - Areas due north of Lake Pontchartrain. Larger cities are Mandeville, Covington and Slidell.
